Reading of the Week

SFU: THE UNIVERSITY OF PRAYER f.mundle

Class was about to begin. It was a freshman course (first year course) entitled: The Powerlessness of Prayer 101. Being the most popular university, people arrived from all over the planet to attend it. This year enrolment numbers soared astronomically. Did I say most popular university, well, it was the only university in hell. S.F.U. (SFU) = Satan’s Fiery University. Three jeers for all! The Chancellor of the university himself, Satan, was the presiding teacher. The objective of the course was not only to further convince but to prove to his followers that there was no power in prayer. They had already learned this while living because they never prayed but… Satan began: I want each one of you to spend the first thousand years of this course praying to the God you said you believed in but never prayed to before you attended this university.

The howling, wailing and gnashing of teeth began. From them strong prayers went heavenward for relief from the infernal fire, for water to drink, for an end to the agony, the misery, the pain, and to the suffering. Five hundred years passed. Not one single prayer was answered. “Still not convinced?” Satan asked. “Then keep on praying. I want you to really understand that praying has no power.” Now, billions upon quadrillions of prayers rose upward. This time people even prayed that descendants of their families would not choose to attend Satan’s Fiery University. They prayed for someone to leave that university and go back to earth to tell others about making right choices about which university to attend. After a long time, the thousand years had passed. Not one single person could get back to earth to tell others. Not one prayer had been answered. Totally convinced that praying has no power, each student graduated. At the flaming convocation Satan addressed his followers: “To all of you who have believed in me, I commend you.” Millions upon millions of graduates looked at one another in astonishment -- as if to ask: “What does he mean?” Satan continued. “When you didn’t pray, you were praying to me. No prayer was my prayer and obedience to me.

You believed me when I told you that you didn’t have to pray, that it was useless to pray, that your prayers would never be answered. You knew my voice and you obeyed.” Better yet, it was I who have always answered your prayers. It was I who spoke into your hearts and minds. It was I who instructed you to be proud. It was I who convinced you to worship money, and on and on and on. “Perhaps I can use you ______________ to teach this course next year. Moral of the story: The prayerless on earth will become very prayerful in hell. Nevertheless while there, they will learn forever the powerlessness of prayer. Today we learn that prayer only has power this side of hell.
